Surfing Into Oblivion

When I taught in San Diego 23 years, I surfed with my students. I recall an evening a bold one stole my wave, and I said, “If you take my wave again, you will lose 50 points on your next essay!” It worked.

It was about using creative nonviolence.

Now, thinking how relatively few greedy men are destroying Spaceship Earth’s life supports, maybe it would help to use creative nonviolence stronger than divestments.

One way to understand what is happening to our climate is to watch these scenes from the film The Big Short (2015), but instead of banking crisis think climate crisis:

The Big Short (2015) – Major Investor confronts Dr. Michael Burry [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – Shorts turn the tables on Wall Street [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – Dr. Michael Burry Betting Against the Housing Market [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – Brownfield Fund shorts AA tranches of MBS [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – Brownfield Fund and Scion Capital unload short positions [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – “Ali vs Foreman” of the Financial World [HD 1080p]

The Big Short (2015) – FrontPoint Partners confronts Morgan Stanley Risk Assessors and S&P

When Burry looked at details, catastrophic U. S. subprime mortgage fraud was obvious. When climate scientist Kevin Anderson looked at details of IPCC reports, catastrophic climate planning fraud was obvious.

I have been repeatedly challenged with some version of, “A small-town Oregon fisherman/ecopoet knows more about the climate situation than global leaders?”

Climate scientist Kevin Anderson does,” has been my answer. Anderson is to year 2024 climate what Burry was to year 2007 to 2010 American subprime mortgage crisis.
